FYI, In today's KC Star Magazine they published the winners of a Royals photo caption contest.  I didn't win, but had fun with my runner up captions and other captions.  If you didn't see the KC Star Magazine in today's newspaper, here's a link to an online version:  http://www.kansascity.com/starmagazine/story/582228.html

The Winter Classic!

THE WINTER CLASSIC!

If you missed it yesterday, you missed a classic, the Winter Classic played on New Years Day.  It was the first OUTDOORS NHL Hockey game played in the USA.  It was between the Buffalo Sabres and the Pittsburgh Penguins.  The Penguins won in OT, by the score of 2-1.  The winter elements came into play with heavy snow falling during the game and winter winds chilling the event.  It was played in Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo, home of the NFL Bills.  The crowd was an NHL record 71,217 fans to watch this "cool" Winter classic!   I'd like to see more outdoor NHL games being played, as it's the actual element played in by the youth across American and Canada.

Mizzou Tigers win Cotton Bowl!

MIZZOU TIGERS WIN THE 2008 COTTON BOWL!

Horray for the Missouri Tigers beating the Arkansas Razorbacks in the Cotton Bowl on New Years Day, 1/1/08, by the score 38 to 7.

Hats off to Tony "the Tiger" Temple, for setting a Cotton Bowl record by rushing for 281 yards including four touchdowns!!!! Tony broke the old Cotton Bowl rushing record by Dicky Meagle of Rice who ran for 265 yards for Rice vs. Alabama in 1954!

Chiefs "Defensive Players" Offense

Chiefs Offense

With defensive end Jarred Allen and linebacker Boomer Grisby in some offensive plays this year, I'm wondering is the Chiefs offensive player bench weak, are the Chief coaches desperate or are these traditional defensive players that good of athletes to play on offense too?   DE, Jarred Allen made a terrific catch and touchdown any offense player would brag about.  I can't remember the last Chief defense player to play on offense.  Any comments?

The College Football Sim Playoffs

Alternate College Football Postseason

The KC Star newspaper suggested an option to the NCAA Football postseason....with the BCS system out and a better tournament situation for teams.  Highlights of the Star's ideas:
  • The top 12 teams in the final BCS standings make the playoffs, includes W-L and BCS averages.
  • the top four seeds each get a bye
  • use the existing bowls to play the games
  • use the website www.whatifsports.com to simulate the results.
Here's the 12 teams who are in the KC Star brackets:

  1. Ohio State
  2. LSU
  3. Virginia Tech
  4. Oklahoma
  5. Georgia
  6. Missouri
  7. Southern Cal
  8. Kansas
  9. West Virginia
  10. Hawaii
  11. Arizona State
  12. Florida
Should be fun to watch the results, but can a simulated bowl playoffs really capture the passion a team has and potential for an upset over a motivated college team?

I'm dreaming of a Royals lineup card....

2008 Royals Lineup

Its a long ways until the Royals season starts, yet alone spring training.  With the new acquisition of Jose Guillen, I'm dreaming of a more potent True Blue Royals lineup card, to get over the wintertime blues, with the snow and ice coming down.   Here's one possibility of a 2008 lineup:

  1. David DeJesus, CF
  2. Mark Grudzelanek, 2B
  3. Mark Teahan, LF
  4. Jose Guillen, RF
  5. Billy Butler, DH
  6. John Buck, C
  7. Alex Gordon, 3B
  8. Ross Gload, 1B
  9. Tony Pena, Jr, SS

What do you think?
If they Royals can acquire some more RBI strength in the line up, that would be great.  If the Royals can still get a "Tori Hunter" or "Andruw Jones" type of power player, put them ahead or right behind Guillen.
If Billy Butler could be a better fielder, and not a liability in the field, there could be more flexibility on who to use as DH.
Another option, switch Butler and Buck in the above lineup.  If Gordon catches fire, move him up in the lineup, otherwise, leave him in the lower line up for less pressure.
