Chiefs Change

Carl Peterson
1989 - 2008

With the announcement of Carl Peterson leaving the Kansas City Chiefs, I'm reflecting back on those years Carl has been the GM of the Chiefs.  I remember when the Chiefs really struggled as a team back in the 1980's (at the same the KC Royals were winning in their Glory Days)....and when Carl Peterson came to town, he turned around the miserable Chiefs into winners for many years.....but those days are gone and now so is Carl.

The Chiefs were 102-58 under Carl Peterson in the 1990's becoming one of seven NFL franchises to win 100 games in a decade.  The Chiefs lead the league in attendance in 1994, 95, 96, 97, 98, and 1999.  The Chiefs record under Carl Peterson from 1989 to 2008 was 176-141-1 overall and 3-9 in the playoffs with two games left in the 2008 season.  Head Coaches under King Carl: Marty Schottenheimer, Gunther Cunningham, Dick Vermeil and Herm Edwards.

Carl, thanks for the good years with the Chiefs and bringing the Chiefs back in the 90's.  I look forward to the Chiefs getting a good GM and getting back to the winning tradition at Arrowhead Stadium!

First Homecoming

HOMECOMING

Several schools claim Homecoming as their invention.  The University of Missouri claim is the most widely accepted.  By 1911, Missouri and Kansas had played 20 times, 19 in Kansas City and once in St. Joseph.  The rivalry would now go to campus, starting with Missouri.  Tigers coach Chester Brewer asked the alumni to "come home" for the occasion, complete with parade and bonfire.  The first Homecoming, in 1911, had the game end in a 3-3 tie, in front of a crowd of 9,000 at Rollins Field.  MU and KU have been each others most common Homecoming opponent.

Border War

MISSOURI TIGERS VS.
KANSAS JAYHAWKS

The Missouri Tigers and Kansas Jayhawks football games have been called the Border War.  These two teams are college football's most played rivalry games, only trailing Wisconsin and Minnesota by one game.  On Nov. 29, 2008, it was the 117th time KU and MU squared off in football against each other.

The first football game of MU and KU was in 1891, with KU winning 22-10.  MU won for the first time against KU in 1893, by the score 12-4.

The MU and KU rivalry is the oldest football rivalry WEST of the MISSISSIPPI River. None got started before this one in 1891!

The teams were the first regular neutral-site rivalry, with 19 of the first 20 games played in KANSAS CITY!

The MU and KU rivalry is the only one with orgins back to the CIVIL WAR!

Kansas City Sports Playoff Drought

Kansas City Sports Post Season Blues

The Kansas City Star newspaper mentioned the fact that the KC Royals and Chiefs have not won a post season game in 15 years....ever since the shuttlecocks were installed at the Nelson Atkins Museum...calling it the Curse of the Shuttlecocks.

Since the Chiefs beat the Houston Oilers in an AFC playoff game on Jan. 16, 1994, Kansas City is the ONLY city with a pro football and baseball team that hasn't won a post season game.  The Chiefs are 0-5 in that 15-year time span and the Royals haven't made the post season.

Other cities with the playoff blues since 1994:
  • Cincinnati, baseball, 1 appearance, made NLCS in 1995, Football, 1 appearance, 0 wins.
  • Washington DC; baseball 0 appearances (incl Expos) and football, 3 appearances, 2 wins
  • Detroit; baseball 1 appearance, made 2006 World Series, Football, 4 appearances, 0 wins.

Maybe it will take some TIME to remove the curse of the shuttlecocks or what ever else is causing bad luck for KC sports team championships.....but not to fear, other cities have had long term "curses", but after a long time, often broke the "curse":

  • Curse of the Billy Goat, with the Chicago Cubs, since 1945....
  • Curse of the Bambino, with the Red Sox since selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees in 1919, but finally breaking the curse and win the World Series in 2004! But in that same time, the Yankees won 26.
  • Curse of the Black Sox, with the Chicago White Sox, throwing the 1919 World Series, took 86 years to finally win the World Series in 2005.
